Boston & District Table Tennis League
Yates & Greenhough Division 1

Some emphatic victories this week in  Division 1, Graves Park C overtaking their A team in the quest for a potential third place finish.

Not only did Graves Park A travel to Lodgers E without no. 8 ranked Rob Smith, Nick Langley had to retire injured in the doubles to double the gloom of the Park players on the way home. Nick had previously beaten Ian Stones and Colin Bell, whilst Phil Brooks beat Colin, to give the Park their three points. Graham Lacey eased through his two games in straight sets, and partnered Ian in the doubles, which ended all square at one end each.

Fifth ranked Tim Day was on top form when Lodgers B visited Wrangle A, winning his three singles in straight sets, whilst Trev Blackbourn survived a gruelling five set game with Dave Coulson, adding a second victory against Den Pattrick. Sam Cooper led the fight back, beating Trev in four sets, and Vic Clements, who had to be content with winning one, against Den. With the doubles also going Lodgers’ way, Wrangle had to be content with a 3-7 defeat.

The highlight of the rearranged encounter between Penmaen D and Lodgers G was the five set tussle between Darron Kent and Mark Hulme, Mark finally emerging victorious. Mat Lilley took the second set against Gary Hill, but the other singles, and the doubles, were over in straight sets, Lodgers recording their seventh 10-0 victory of the season.

Graves Park A were grateful for the return of Rob Smith for their match against table toppers Penmaen A, Rob beating Alan Ashberry and Peter Munch to record the Park’s only points. Nick Langley took Peter to five ends, but with Derek Woods in fine form, there was little resistance from the Park, Penmaen winning 8-2.
Scott Sykes did everything bar win a game when Penmaen B hosted Graves Park C, going two up against Martin Walters and Mick East before fading to lose in five ends. Roger Hooten emerged on the wrong side of some lengthy deuce games, but the Park rolled on, securing an emphatic 10-0 victory.

When Graves Park B won the first 8 games, things looked very ominous for Penmaen D, but Mat Lilley struck back in game 9, beating Mick Maltby in four sets, before combining with Gavin Herberts to beat Mike Freeston and Alan Reetham in the doubles. Mike had earlier played a captain’s role, dropping only one end, against Gavin, whilst Alan came back from 2-1 sets down against Gavin to win that game and complete his trio of victories.

Results: Lodgers E 7, Graves Park A 3; Wrangle A 3, Lodgers B 7; Penmaen D 0, Lodgers G 10; Graves Park A 2, Penmaen A 8; Penmaen B 0, Graves Park C 10; Graves Park B 8, Penmaen D 2

A.D.Dickinson Division 2

With Penmaen E losing to Penmaen C this week, have they blown any chance of promotion from the second division? With games running out, they are now 13 points adrift of the C team, with only one match in hand.

Chris Cooke was on top form when Penmaen C played Wrangle B, winning his three games in straight sets to put his team on track for another win in their quest for a promotion spot. No. 8 ranked Dave Smith added two more hard-fought victories, although Tim Sampson took him to five sets, and Viv Rynne to four, but Dave was finally beaten by David Butler. John Shortland had four deuce sets in his singles – three in one game, against David – but was unable to force a victory. However, Dave and Chris beat Tim and David in the doubles to clinch a narrow 6-4 victory on the night.

Fifth ranked Steve Hill proved his worth when Sibsey B hosted third placed Lodgers H, winning his three games to give Sibsey three vital points. Richard Hill stretched each of the Lodgers’ players, but lost four decisive games at deuce to break his resistance. With no third player, Sibsey needed the doubles to stay clear of the teams below them, but Steve Marshall and Boyd Smith edged a tense five-setter to record a 7-3 win.

In what might yet prove to be a pivotal result in the race for promotion, second placed Penmaen C beat fourth placed Penmaen E 7-3. Richard Malik showed why he is top of the averages in the division, winning his three to stay unbeaten this season. However, he was made to work hard for every point, needing five sets to see off the challenge of Chris Cooke, and winning two sets at deuce against Dave Smith. John Shortland took the first end against Richard, but could not press home the advantage. Jack Bittner and James Wood tried to add to the E team’s score, James taking John to five ends, but it was not to be.

Steve Hill continued his current run of good form, beating both Tony Hall and Tim Sampson of two man Wrangle B to set his Sibsey B team on their way to a 7-3 victory. Richard Hill chipped in with one, against Tim, whilst Wayne Grooby found the going altogether tougher against the experienced Wrangle pair. Richard and Steve combined in the doubles to see off the challenge of Tim and Tony, thus rounding off a highly satisfactory evening for the Sibsey team.

Results: Penmaen C 6, Wrangle B 4; Sibsey B 3, Lodgers H 7; Penmaen E 3, Penmaen C 7; Wrangle B 3, Sibsey B 7
